After a week off, the PPA Tour is back in action this week on the west coast.

The Newport Beach Open started Monday with pro qualifying, and main draw matches will start on Tuesday, with one round in every division to be played each day through Championship Sunday.

The event is being held at the Tennis Club of Newport Beach, and the weather is expected to be near perfect, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-70s for most of the week. There are a couple days (Thursday and Saturday) that could be a bit breezy, however.

This week's tournament is an Open, so it is worth 1,000 ranking points for the winners in each division. Catherine Parenteau is skipping this event and Ben Johns -- fresh off a silver medal in singles at the Mesa Cup two weeks ago -- is only playing doubles this week.

This week's matches can be viewed on Pickleballtv or the Pickleballtv App.

Here's a look at the schedule and draws for each event:

Men's doubles

Ben Johns/Gabe Tardio were pushed by Christian Alshon/Hayden Patriquin in the gold-medal match in Mesa, but Johns/Tardio ultimately took a very close Game 4 to claim the title. It was their 12th gold medal together since the beginning of 2025, and they've won 9 of the last 10 tournaments they've played together.

Alshon/Patriquin now have three silvers and a bronze so far in 2026 and appear to be the main threat to the top seeds.

Women's doubles

We're used to Anna Leigh Waters/Anna Bright dominating at this point, but even by their standards the Mesa Cup was an incredible performance. They didn't drop a game and outscored their opponents 101-27.

They are heavy favorites until further notice.

Mixed doubles

All eyes will be on this division this week after Patriquin/Bright upset Johns/Waters in Mesa -- and did it in convincing fashion with a 3-game sweep in the final. If we get the same gold-medal match again this week, it will be the most intriguing match of the tournament.

And if Patriquin/Bright beat the top seeds again, questions about the future of the Johns/Waters partnership will grow louder and I'll be ready to call this the best rivalry going. But if Johns/Waters rebound with a strong performance and another gold medal, it will start to look like last month's upset was a blip on the radar.

Men's singles

Chris Haworth, who is coming off a gold medal in Mesa, has moved up to the No. 3 seed and is on the same side of the bracket as No. 1 Hunter Johnson this week. Many (including me) believe it's just a matter of time before Haworth moves into the top spot, and this week could accelerate that if Haworth were to beat Johnson in the semifinals.

Haworth has won three of the past five singles titles, with Johnson and Staksrud taking the other two.

Women's singles

Waters was even more dominant in singles than she was in women's doubles in Mesa, going 10-0 and outscoring her opponents 110-22. The most anybody scored against her in a game was four points, and she dominated Kate Fahey in the final (11-3, 11-1).

If there's a concern, it would be that the last time she played Kaitlyn Christian it was a close(ish) match that went to a Game 3. They would play in the semifinals if seeding holds.
