The backhand flick. It’s the move that separates the 4.0s from the 5.0s, the casual players from the serious contenders. This isn’t just another shot; it’s a statement. It says, “I’m here to win.”

Why the Backhand Flick?

Picture this: you’re in the middle of a tense dink rally, each player probing for a weakness. Suddenly, your opponent gives you just a little too much height on the ball.

A lesser player would dink it back. But not you. You unleash the backhand flick—a quick, deceptive roll that sends the ball flying past your opponent before they even know what hit them.

Practice the flick and any other shot with our favorite ball machine, The ERNE.

How to Hit the Backhand Flick Consistently

Positioning & Paddle Angle

Start with your paddle angled slightly downward. Imagine you’re throwing a frisbee—coil your wrist back as if you’re ready to fling that disc across the court.

This is your starting position. Keep the paddle in front of you with a straight elbow, giving yourself enough space to generate power and accuracy.

The Snap

The magic of the backhand flick comes from the snap.

As you bring your paddle forward, snap your wrist to create topspin. This spin is crucial—it pulls the ball down into your opponent’s court, making it difficult for them to return with any force.

Knee Bend & Balance

Get low. Bend your knees to help you swing upward and under the ball, adding that topspin.

Your non-dominant arm plays a crucial role here—use it to counterbalance your swing, keeping you stable and ready for the next shot.

When to Use It

The backhand flick isn’t an all-purpose shot. It shines when the ball's trajectory is falling into that tricky area just below the net.

Here, your opponent expects a dink or a soft return. Instead, surprise them with a quick flick, turning defense into offense in a split second.

The backhand flick is more than just a shot—it’s a mindset. It’s about seizing opportunities, taking calculated risks, and keeping your opponents on their toes.
