Major League Pickleball is returning to its roots in Austin this weekend, with several top Premier Level teams in action and all 6 Challenger Level teams making their debut.
Austin has long been one of the most well-known pickleball hotspots in the country and the first-ever Major League Pickleball event was held in nearby Dripping Springs. MLP Austin -- the third event of the 2025 season -- is being hosted by the Texas Ranchers and held on two brand-new outdoor courts at Austin Pickle Ranch. There are several matches each day from Friday through Monday (Memorial Day).
Premier Level teams participating: Dallas, Miami, New Jersey, Texas and Orlando.
Challenger Level teams participating: Nashville, California, Bay Area, D.C., Florida and Las Vegas.
It's an exciting week for us at The Kitchen because it's the first time we'll see the Nashville Chefs in action since our staff took over operations of the franchise late last year. We caught up with each player on the experienced Chefs roster after the MLP Challenger Level free-agency draft in March. You can find that story here.

In both divisions, teams will essentially be playing a round robin this week, facing every other team once.

New this season, Major League Pickleball has introduced Saturday Night Pickleball and Sunday Night Pickleball, which will feature marquee matchups in prime time with teams wearing "special edition" uniforms. This week those matchups are:
Saturday night pickleball: Dallas Flash vs. Texas Ranchers, 4:30 p.m. CT -- This match should have plenty of in-person fan support, as both teams have done a good job cultivating their respective local fanbases. Dallas looked dominant in their first matches of the season at MLP Orlando, but the Flash will face a much tougher slate at this event. Can they keep their perfect record intact?
Sunday night pickleball: New Jersey 5s vs. Dallas Flash, 4:30 p.m. CT -- This is the match of the weekend in my book. New Jersey was beaten by the St. Louis Shock in a chaotic match at MLP Orlando that is more known for what happened on the sidelines, but otherwise the 5s have played well this season. I think they're a bit overlooked currently, and I wouldn't be surprised if they can push Dallas to a Dreambreaker and beat the defending champs in a rematch of last year's MLP final.
Other intriguing matchups at MLP Austin
Friday: Las Vegas Night Owls vs. Nashville Chefs, 2 p.m. CT -- The debut of the Chefs won't be an easy one. Vegas has a very strong roster on paper with Pablo Tellez, James Delgado, Brooke Buckner and Chao Yi Wang. But even though it's not technically a home game, we expect the Chefs to have plenty of local support with matches being played just a few miles from The Kitchen's HQ.
Saturday: Orlando Squeeze vs. Dallas Flash, 11 a.m CT -- Orlando sits atop the points standings, but they also are tied for the most matches played (11) and the majority of their wins have come against teams in the bottom half of the standings. I think this week might be a bit of a reality check for the Squeeze as they will face several of the league's top teams for the first time.
Monday: Texas Ranchers vs. New Jersey 5s, 1 p.m. CT -- I view Texas in a similar light as I do Orlando at this point in the season. Two of their three wins came against Atlanta and Chicago, who aren't very good, so I'm not ready to consider the Ranchers a legit contender. They could change my mind this weekend, though. I expect the in-person atmosphere to be electric for this match.
