New this season, Major League Pickleball has introduced Saturday Night Pickleball and Sunday Night Pickleball, which will feature marquee matchups in prime time with teams wearing "special edition" uniforms. This week those matchups are:

Saturday Night Pickleball: Brooklyn Pickleball Team vs. Orlando Squeeze, 5:30 p.m. -- The Squeeze are the host team for this event, so it makes sense that they would be in the prime slot on opening weekend. It's also the debut for the Brooklyn Pickleball Team, previously the D.C. Pickleball Team. The Brooklyn and D.C. franchises announced last week that they had agreed to swap franchise name rights. I have Brooklyn at No. 5 in my preseason power rankings and Orlando at No. 8. Both figure to be vying for playoff seeding, so it's a match that could really matter in the long run. The top 10 teams in the regular-season standings make the playoffs, and there is a one-match elimination round for the 7-10 seeds to advance to the quarterfinals, with the No. 7 seed getting to pick who they play in the first round.

Sunday Night Pickleball: St. Louis Shock vs. New Jersey 5s, 4:15 p.m. -- Not only is this a matchup of two teams that are likely to be among the best in the league (I have the 5s at No. 1 and the Shock at No. 3), but it got a lot more interesting two weeks ago when it was announced that Anna Leigh Waters (the 5s) and Anna Bright (the Shock) would be teaming up on the PPA Tour for the remainder of the season. They have yet to play their first match together in 2025 and they have been rivals on the women's side for the past year+, so it will be interesting to see how they perform on opposite sides of the net this weekend.

Other intriguing matchups at MLP Orlando

Thursday: Texas Ranchers vs. Brooklyn Pickleball Team, 3 p.m. -- The last time we saw Christian Alshon and Eric Oncins on the same court, Alshon was not happy with Oncins at the end of a quarterfinal match at the PPA Tour North Carolina Open. Now they will be teammates for the first time on the Ranchers, and we're curious how they will get along and mesh. If they gel together, they could be a dangerous men's team this season. I have Texas at No. 6 in my preseason rankings.

Friday: Dallas Flash vs. Columbus Sliders, noon -- The defending champion Dallas Flash make their season debut on Friday. They assembled the same starting four they had last season in Jorja Johnson, JW Johnson, Tyra Black and Augie Ge via the free-agency draft. They should be one of the top teams again this season, but Columbus also has a very strong new-look roster with a likely starting four of Andrei Daescu, CJ Klinger, Parris Todd and Lea Jansen. I have the Flash at No. 2 in my rankings and Columbus at No. 4, but I won't hesitate to flip them if Columbus comes out of the gates fast this weekend.

Sunday: Brooklyn Pickleball Team vs. St. Louis Shock, 11 a.m. -- When Anna Bright (St. Louis) decided to team up with Anna Leigh Waters for the rest of the season on the PPA Tour, she broke off her longstanding partnership with Rachel Rohrabacher (Brooklyn). The so-called "girlies" were a fan favorite team and on Sunday morning they will face off on opposite sides of the net. Will we see fireworks in this match?

Sunday: New Jersey 5s vs. Los Angeles Mad Drops, 12:45 p.m. -- This is another matchup between former partners. Anna Leigh Waters (New Jersey) and Catherine Parenteau (Los Angeles) will face off for the first time since their unexpected break-up earlier this month. Catherine is a true pro and doesn't normally get loud or chirpy, so I don't necessarily expect them to go at each other in this match, but it will definitely be interesting to pay attention to the body language of both players.
