Chong Kim is no stranger to pickleball's ability to connect people. But in his mind, it’s about more than just a game.
Kim is on a mission to play pickleball in every state, while spreading the message that mental health matters.
His journey began after a personal tragedy. Kim lost a friend in his local pickleball league, a heartbreaking moment that made him realize that for many, pickleball was a lifeline.
“This is pickleball. This is what pickleball really is. It’s not about how good you are or what level you’re playing at. It’s about the community,” Kim told KFYR.
That’s when his road trip began, combining his love for the game with a deeper purpose. He wants every player he meets to leave the court with a sense of connection and a reminder to check in on themselves and others.
Soon to be on his 20th state, Kim has already made an impact. From Maine to Montana, he's played with people from all walks of life.
“I can go play with a 12-year-old, or I can go play with a 72-year-old, and I have just as much fun,” Kim said.
"Sharing a little love is why I take pictures with new players and hold up a baby heart sign with my fingers. It’s my way of giving them something that can be shared with others."
While other pickleball-related challenges over the last year have raised money for charities through setting world records, Kim's approach is focused on how pickleball can be the perfect icebreaker to start tough conversations.
Kim's favorite place to play so far? “Texas has been amazing,” he admitted. But wherever he goes, he sees the same thing: a community leader bringing people together, a court packed with families, friends, and everyone in between.
As Kim’s journey continues, he’s targeting November 12th as his finish date in his home state of Texas.
But this isn’t just a tour of America’s pickleball courts—it’s a call to action. Mental health awareness isn’t just a talking point for Kim, it’s the heart of his mission.
