Linda Corcoran knew something was wrong when she stepped onto the pickleball court and noticed the lines looked wavy.
This was in 2021. Linda was in her mid-70s, and had been playing for a couple of years.
While her sport was experiencing a boom and headlines started warning pickleball players about the potential for eye injuries, Linda found that pickleball actually saved her eyes.
"Beyond this affecting my ability to play, I was really worried about what these symptoms meant for my vision and overall eye health," she told Fox News Digital.
That concern led her to consulting with her eye specialist. Low and behold, she found out she had wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD).
AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in individuals aged 65 and older, impacting around 1.5 million people in the U.S., according to experts.
Symptoms of wet AMD include:
- blurred vision
- central blind spots
- difficulty distinguishing colors
- wavy or distorted lines
The condition may further impair the ability to recognize faces, read, write, or drive.
