There’s an undeniable energy in the world of pickleball, one that bridges generations, transcends borders, and now — thanks to the Cabieses siblings Hercilio and Miranda — unites nations.
This brother-sister duo has not only championed pickleball in Peru, but also created a global platform, the Pickleball World Cup, bringing together 32 countries to compete in Lima.
From Lima to the World
Hercilio and Miranda Cabieses are more than just a pair of sibling pickleball players.
Their journey began in 2021 when they represented Peru for the first time at the US OPEN, making history as they carried the Peruvian flag during the opening ceremony.
But their mission extended far beyond that. They wanted to bring the joys of pickleball to their home country and the rest of the world.
They founded Pickleball Peru, not just as a sports organization, but as a movement to propel representation of their home country in the global pickleball movement.
"The main challenge is to raise awareness of a new sport, which began to have a greater impact after the pandemic," Hercilio says of the process of founding their organization.
"Obtaining financial resources to carry out the activities that allow to spread the accessibility of the sport in the different regions has also been a challenge."
That's where the pair's Cabieses Foundation comes into play. Through the organization, they’ve donated equipment, organized youth programs, and empowered para-athletes in pickleball.

"We've spread the sport of Pickleball in the most vulnerable places and contribute to improving the quality of life for more than 30,000 children," Hercilio says of the foundation's accomplishments.
"We've also created the first community of para pickleball athletes in Peru," he says.
The Birth of the Pickleball World Cup
Their crowning achievement is the Pickleball World Cup, set to take place from October 22-28, 2024, in Lima, Peru.
Timed perfectly with the Bolivarian Games, this event will see over 30 countries competing on over 16 courts, with more than 500 athletes striving to claim the title of World Pickleball Champion.
A collaboration with the Peruvian government, including the Ministry of Education, has provided them the support needed to host such an ambitious event.
The World Cup is not only a competition, but a celebration of the sport’s growing international reach and the communities it unites.
Now in it's second year, the World Cup promises to bring even more attention to the Cabieses' home country.
"Having seen the para athletes and children of my country in a world tournament enjoying the sport, the impact it had on the community was massive," Hercilio says.
"We were able to bring together different countries of the Americas in a single tournament, sharing and enjoying together the passion for the sport."
The special edition of the Pickleball World Cup 2023 took place in the same venue of the Pan-American Games Lima 2019, uniting 14 countries for the very first time in which pickleball players competed for their home countries.
Impact Beyond the Court
The influence of Hercilio and Miranda doesn’t stop at organizing events.
Their passion has fostered a growing pickleball community in Peru and inspired countless others around the world.
As the global pickleball community gears up for the World Cup, all eyes are on Lima.
"I visualize this as the greatest tournament in the world next to the Olympic Games, where the participation of countries is sought," Hercilio says.
"It will be an event that no one will want to miss."
