Community members and a nature group in Louisville, Kentucky, have come together to oppose a planned pickleball and tennis complex in the city's Joe Creason Park.

The 25-acre facility, which is expected to cost about $65 million, would feature dozens of tennis and pickleball courts as well as other amenities.

The group, which is called "Save Joe Creason Park," said they plan to voice opposition to the project at two upcoming community meetings with the developers on May 6 and May 10.

"This is not just a neighborhood issue," Leigh Kolley, one of the group's founding organizers, told Louisville news station WHAS11. "This is about setting a dangerous precedent allowing the destruction of free and open greenspaces in support of economic development that only benefits a few."

The Louisville Nature Center has also joined neighbors in advocating against the complex. Officials with the nature center say the complex could impact wildlife and a nearby watershed, "all of which would be disrupted by increased traffic, construction and permanent land-use changes."

The project led by Kentucky Tennis and Pickleball Center Inc. would feature 36 tennis courts and 18 pickleball courts. One of the developers said they have made efforts to mitigate concerns with the project.

"We have done traffic studies. We're looking to do solar panels on the roof of the whole thing. So we're net zero," Will Davis said. "We're actually going to increase the tree canopy. So we try to do our homework and we're trying to be a good neighbor of everyone in this community," Davis said.
