Florida House votes to stop pickleball courts from being built in state parks

A bill that outlaws pickleball courts and other developments in Florida state parks was unanimously passed earlier this week by the state's House of Representatives.
The measure received broad support from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in a 113-0 vote, according to a news release from Rep. Peggy Gossett-Seidman’s office.
Gossett-Seidman helped craft House Bill 209 in response to public outcry last summer after plans were leaked showing the planned development of pickleball courts, golf courses and luxury hotels at some of Florida's most popular state parks.

The news sparked protests across the state, with Gov. Ron DeSantis eventually asking the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to withdraw the proposals.
Lawmakers hope House Bill 209 will prevent any such developments by placing “commonsense” limits on certain commercial projects that could potentially threaten native wildlife and ecosystems.
