Major League Pickleball heads to the Lone Star state this week for the penultimate event of the regular season -- MLP Dallas.

It's been a busy week for the league, as several big trades and a few upsets have turned what was widely viewed as a two-team battle for the top spot between Dallas and St. Louis into a free-for-all involving several teams.

We broke down all of the recent trades here, and did our best to project where all of the new-look rosters fit in our Week 8 Power Rankings.

The good news for fans (and pundits like me) is that many of the top contenders are playing each other in Dallas this weekend, so that should provide some much-needed clarity on where things stand as the season inches closer to the playoffs.

There are 9 Premier Level teams competing in Dallas, and the Challenger Level teams have the week off before the final regular-season event of the season next week in Salt Lake City.

Premier Level teams in Dallas
Carolina Hogs, Dallas Flash, Los Angeles Mad Drops, New Jersey 5s, New York Hustlers, Phoenix Flames, SoCal Hard Eights, St Louis Shock, Texas Ranchers.

The event is being hosted by the Dallas Flash and will be held at Pickler Universe – Carrollton, which is an indoor facility (that's important for at least one reason that we'll get into below).

Major League Pickleball Dallas marquee matchups

Friday: St. Louis Shock vs. Los Angeles Mad Drops -- LA's new-look roster will have an easy match on paper Thursday vs. New York, then gets thrown into the deep end against the Shock, who are sitting at No. 1 in the standings in points per match. One thing to watch for is whether LA's Ben Johns has any struggles with the lighting. He has said multiple times in the past that he dislikes playing indoors because of a childhood injury that makes it harder for him to track the ball in indoor lighting. The last time his team played at an indoor venue, he withdrew from the event and publicly called for the league to do a better job of making sure the lighting on court was bright enough. Assuming no issues on that front, this should be a very competitive match. LA's women's doubles pair of Catherine Parenteau/Jade Kawamoto is 18-4 on the season and already have a win over Anna Bright/Kate Fahey earlier this season. If LA wins the women's doubles game, that means Ben Johns would only have to win one of his games to force a Dreambreaker. It remains to be seen how Johns and Hunter Johnson will play together, but in mixed he will likely pair with Parenteau, and they will be favored on paper against anybody they play. And LA already had the best Dreambreaker lineup in the league (they are 6-1 in Dreambreakers) even before getting Johns. For those reasons, I like LA in this matchup.

Saturday: Los Angeles Mad Drops vs. New Jersey 5s -- The battle of the new-look rosters. New Jersey made a somewhat surprising move to go out and get Noe Khlif in a trade with the intention of replacing Zane Navratil in the starting lineup. That was seemingly an admission from New Jersey's front office that they didn't think they could get past Dallas or St. Louis in a best-of-3 playoff series with the roster they had. The 5s are a combined 0-3 against Dallas and St. Louis, and recently lost to St. Louis in regulation in the MLP Mid-Season Tournament semifinals. Khlif is a slight upgrade in men's doubles, mixed doubles and singles from Navratil, so I think they got better in the trade, but now they have a third serious contender to deal with in Los Angeles. Again I'd give the Mad Drops the edge in this one, but we should learn a lot about both teams in this matchup.

Saturday: Dallas Flash vs. Texas Ranchers -- This is a rematch from when the Flash took down the Ranchers at MLP Austin in May. The scorelines in the doubles games in that match were pretty much all blowouts (Dallas won women's doubles 11-1, Texas won men's doubles 11-3, Dallas won mixed No. 1 11-3 and Texas won mixed No. 2 11-5), but the Dreambreaker was very close, with Dallas coming out on top 22-20. Possibly the biggest difference this time around: Texas had the home crowd behind them in that last match, and Dallas figures to have a significant home court advantage this time. Give me Dallas in this matchup.

Sunday: Los Angeles Mad Drops vs. Dallas Flash -- Dallas is looking to rebound at their home event after losing for the first (and second) time this season at MLP St. Louis last weekend. Tyra Black suffered an ankle injury in Dallas' match Saturday against Columbus, but posted on Instagram earlier this week that she expects to be ready to go for this weekend's matches. This is the most interesting match of the week (and possibly the season) in my opinion. I'm taking Los Angeles in a Dreambreaker.

Sunday: St. Louis Shock vs. New Jersey 5s -- We really are spoiled with the matchups this week. This is another one that has big playoff seeding implications and also will provide clarity for where these teams stand heading into the playoffs. When these teams played each other two weeks ago at the MLP Mid-Season Tournament, New Jersey chose to start Mari Humberg in place of Meghan Dizon. It didn't work out, as St. Louis won in regulation. The 5s then went back to Dizon for their matches the next day and ended up finishing third in Grand Rapids. It will be interesting to see who they go with in the starting lineup this time around. Either way, I still give St. Louis the edge.
