TeachMe.To making it easy for players to find qualified, local pickleball instructors

Pickleball can be intimidating at first.

The rules are a little tricky, and if you’re like most players, your first experience with the game comes at a local park, where strangers try to help you along by offering random (and often unsolicited) tips.

While some players like the communal nature of public recreational pickleball and eventually figure the game out through trial and error, that approach is certainly not for everybody.

That’s where TeachMe.To comes in.

The company helps pickleball players (and players of several other sports) find qualified instructors in their area who can help them learn the sport in a more structured way.

“Think of us like Airbnb for private lessons,” said Tyler Maloney, Founder and CEO of TeachMe.To. “We make it really easy to search, find and book in-person instructors, serving everybody from the player just getting into the game to those who have been playing for a while and are now looking to take their game to the next level.”

Thousands of coaches across the U.S. and Canada have joined the platform since the company started in 2022, and TeachMe.To is now the No. 1 provider of pickleball lessons in the world. They also facilitate lessons for golf, tennis, surfing and more.

How it works

When an instructor signs up to be on the TeachMe.To platform, there are a few ways the company screens them to make sure students are getting connected with qualified teachers.

They collect DUPR data to determine the instructor’s playing level and verify previous coaching experience and any certifications that the instructor has. From there, TeachMe.To lets reviews and customer satisfaction determine the best coaches.

Instructors who get good reviews and have a high number of returning customers will be ranked highly when students search for lessons in their local area. It’s essentially the same as instructors getting word-of-mouth recommendations, which is how a majority of players got connected with coaches previously.

“We’re just streamlining the process,” Maloney said. “Players don’t have to look around at a bunch of different clubs to find a lesson. We essentially created this centralized directory where you can see all the coaches, you can read reviews, you can see when they're available, where they teach and what their price is. And so all those things bring a lot of trust and ease to the process.”

TeachMe.To serving a wide range of pickleball players

Maloney said TeachMe.To now has a good mix of instructors who specialize in teaching beginners and those who are tailored for more advanced players looking to level up. And 90-95% of the U.S. population now has at least one coach within a 20-minute drive.

“Early on we were serving a lot of beginners who were maybe a little intimidated to start or didn’t know how to get started,” he said. “And then over time, as we’ve grown, we’ve started to better serve the intermediate players who are really looking to get better and have specific goals.”

In addition to those instructors, Maloney said there are a lot of people on the platform that he would describe as “community builders.”

“They love helping people get into the game and they will do a series of three lessons or something like that, where they help players get the rules down, teach them the basics and connect them to the local community,” he said. “And a lot of times they will do those for free or not charge very much. So there’s a lot of different ways to utilize coaching, especially in pickleball because it's so community driven. We also see a lot of 3-and-me lessons where it’s a social thing with you, two friends and a coach.”

TeachMe.To also has an app for players and coaches, where they can make and track payments, view their calendar and send messages. The company is also continually providing new learning tools for students, where they can set goals and track progress, similar to Strava or other fitness apps.

“That’s a cool area we’re working on a lot – how do we use the technology and the product to enhance the learning experience beyond just helping you find a coach,” Maloney said. “We’re organizing all the feedback you're getting and actually helping players get better faster.”
