Anna Leigh Waters will be making her international pickleball debut this week at the PPA Tour Asia MB Hanoi Cup in Vietnam.

Waters leads a strong U.S.-based contingent of players that also includes Ben Johns, Anna Bright, Hayden Patriquin, Federico Staksrud, Kate Fahey, Christian Alshon, Gabe Tardio, Catherine Parenteau, Tyra Black, Tyson McGuffin and more.

The MB Hanoi Cup is the first event of the PPA Tour Asia season, which currently includes 10 events scheduled in 5 countries throughout Asia.

The tournament started Tuesday evening (U.S. time) with pro qualifying, and main-draw matches will begin on Wednesday (U.S. time). Matches will be broadcast on PickleballTV and the PPA Tour Asia YouTube page throughout the week.

Here’s a look at the schedule draws in each division, including some notable partnerships:

Men’s doubles

No. 1 Ben Johns/Gabe Tardio: They’re taking their 7-tournament winning streak on the road.

No. 2 Federico Staksrud/Hayden Patriquin: They are the last team to have beaten Johns/Tardio, with a win over the top seeds at the Pickleball World Championships last fall. That was also the last time Staksrud/Patriquin played together — can they pick up where they left off?

No. 3 Dylan Frazier/Eric Oncins: The last time Eric Oncins was in Vietnam, he turned into the star of the tournament and won gold in men’s doubles with Tyson McGuffin. Can he defend his title with Frazier?

No. 4 Tyson McGuffin/Riley Newman: This is a partnership the OG pickleball fans can appreciate. McGuffin and Newman played almost exclusively together for much of 2020 and 2021, with tons of success. Newman eventually went on to partner with Matt Wright, while McGuffin partnered with Jay Devilliers and others following their breakup. This is the first time McGuffin and Newman will be back on the same side of the net since.

Women’s doubles

No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters/Anna Bright: They’ve been on cruise control the whole year, and last week outscored their opponents 121-15 at the Greater Zion Cup.

No. 2 Catherine Parenteau/Tyra Black: They’ve played together once before — at the Daytona Beach Open in December — finishing second. They lost to Waters/Jorja Johnson in the final of that event, but otherwise played very well.

Mixed doubles

No. 1 Ben Johns/Anna Leigh Waters: They’ve won three straight titles since their lone loss earlier this season at the Mesa Cup.

No. 2 Hayden Patriquin/Anna Bright: They pulled off the big upset over Johns/Waters in Mesa, but haven’t been able to replicate that performance in the tournaments since.

No. 3 Gabe Tardio/Tyra Black: They’ve played together twice before — once in 2024 and once in 2023, making the quarterfinals both times. But that was also before they both cracked the top 5 in the points standings. I’m interested to see the potential semifinal matchup with Johns/Waters.

No. 4 Christian Alshon/Kaitlyn Christian: They partnered together in a PPA Tour Asia event last year, earning silver at the Panas Malaysia Cup in September. They have a bit of a tougher road this time, though, as more U.S.-based players are making this trip.

Women’s singles

No Anna Leigh Waters in the draw opens the door for several players to make a run.

Men’s singles

No Hunter Johnson and no Chris Haworth means Federico Staksrud is the favorite.
