Why swing weight matters more than static weight
Ever picked up a paddle that felt shockingly heavy despite the tag saying 7.8 oz? Or one that swung effortlessly even though the scale said 8.4? That’s the gap between static weight (what a scale measures) and swing weight (what your arm feels). They’re not the same number, and swing weight is the one that actually determines how a paddle plays.
Same static weight can feel completely different depending on where the mass lives. Concentrate it in the head and the paddle plays heavy: long swings feel powerful, quick reactions feel sluggish. Concentrate it in the handle and the paddle plays light: fast hands at the kitchen, but drives feel soft. Picking your next paddle by static weight alone is like choosing a bat by ounces without checking where the barrel sits. You’re missing the part that actually swings.

What your swing weight tells you
Four things, each tied directly to how the paddle plays on the court.
- Arm fatigue. Higher swing weight means more strain over a long session. If your shoulder feels heavy after 90 minutes, your paddle may be too head-heavy.
- Hand speed at the net. Lower swing weight gives you faster reactions in fast-hand exchanges at the kitchen. Go higher and you’ll get beat on quick counters.
- Power on drives. Higher swing weight gives you more plow-through when you swing hard. Lower, and you have to swing faster to generate the same pace.
- Stability on off-center hits. Higher swing weight means the paddle twists less when you miss the sweet spot. Lower, and mishits feel dead.

Grab three numbers from your paddle
- Static weight. Toss it on any kitchen scale that reads in ounces. Write down the number to one decimal place.
- Total length. Run a tape measure or ruler from the very bottom of the grip (the butt cap) to the tip of the paddle face. Most paddles are 16 to 17 inches.
- Balance point. Rest the paddle face-down on the edge of a table with the handle sticking out. Slide it slowly toward the edge until the whole paddle balances without tipping. Mark that spot with a fingernail, then measure from the butt cap to the mark in centimeters (not inches; the calculator wants metric here).

What is swing weight, exactly?
Swing weight is the paddle’s moment of inertia around the point where you grip it , typically 10 cm up from the butt cap. It measures rotational inertia, not just mass. A paddle with mass concentrated in the head will have a higher swing weight than a paddle with the same static weight but mass concentrated in the handle. That’s why swing weight matters more than static weight for how a paddle actually plays.
What’s a “good” swing weight?
Most pickleball paddles fall between 105 and 125 kg·cm². Higher swing weight (120+) means more power and stability , great for baseline drives and hard-hitting play. Lower swing weight (105–115) means faster hands at the net , better for reactive volleys, quick counter-attacks, and doubles play at the kitchen line. Neither is objectively “better”; it depends on how you like to play.
How accurate is this calculator?
The calculator uses a physics-based formula (moment of inertia around a 10 cm pivot). It’s directionally accurate , you can reliably compare two paddles to see which has a higher swing weight , but the exact number can differ from lab-measured values by ±5–10 kg·cm² because real paddles have non-uniform mass distribution. Use it to compare paddles head-to-head; don’t sweat a couple points of difference from published specs.
Why measure balance point in centimeters, not inches?
The industry-standard swing weight unit (kg·cm²) uses metric. Measuring the balance point in centimeters keeps the calculation cleaner and matches how paddle manufacturers publish their specs. If your ruler only has inches, multiply your reading by 2.54 to convert , but centimeters is more precise for this measurement (a 1 mm shift in balance point changes the estimate).
How do I find the balance point?
Place the paddle face-down flat on a table so the handle hangs over the edge. Slide it toward the edge until the paddle balances on the edge without tipping (like a see-saw). Mark that spot on the paddle’s edge with a small piece of tape or a fingernail, then measure from the butt cap to that mark. Alternatively, balance the paddle across a pencil or ruler edge on a table , same result.
Can I use this on tennis or padel racquets?
Technically the physics is the same, but the formula is tuned to pickleball’s size and mass range (7–9 oz, 14–17"). Tennis racquets are heavier and longer and typically have swing weights of 300–380 kg·cm². The calculator will give you a number for a tennis racquet, but it’ll be off , use a tennis-specific tool for those.
