The deadline for trade window No. 1 for Major League Pickleball is Saturday at 10 p.m. ET, and there were multiple trades Saturday afternoon involving both Premier Level and Challenger Level teams.
Below are all the trades that were made on Saturday.
Trade 1
-Atlanta Bouncers receive Vivian Glozman from the New York Hustlers.
-New York Hustlers receive Susannah Barr and cash considerations from the Atlanta Bouncers.
Updated rosters
New York Hustlers: Susannah Barr, Lea Jansen, Riley Newman, Jack Sock.
Atlanta Bouncers: Emily Cederquist, Todd Fought, Vivian Glozman, Jaume Martinez Vich.
Glozman wasn't a member of the Hustlers for very long -- she was traded to New York from D.C. late last month. On its face this may seem like a surprising trade given that Glozman has had much better results over the past year than Barr, but every Major League Pickleball team will be required to drop at least one player from their roster Sunday.
It seems New York had intended to drop Glozman, and by making this trade they're getting paid for a player they weren't planning to have on the roster in a day anyway.
And they don't have any choice but to drop Barr, as she is not a UPA signed player and therefore isn't eligible to play MLP in 2025.
The Bouncers, meanwhile, get a battle-tested player in Glozman who was a big part of D.C.'s success in 2024 -- that team finished fourth in the regular season standings.
Atlanta is joining Premier this season after finishing in the top four in Challenger last year.
Trade 2 (three-team trade)
-Carolina Pickleball Club receives Yana Newell and cash considerations from Las Vegas Night Owls.
-Las Vegas Night Owls receive Brooke Buckner from Carolina Pickleball Club and cash considerations from SoCal Hard Eights.
-SoCal Hard Eights receive Judit Castillo from Las Vegas Night Owls.
Updated team rosters
Carolina Pickleball Club: Kaitlyn Christian, Ben Johns, Collin Johns, Yana Newell.
Las Vegas Night Owls: Brooke Buckner, Chris Haworth, Pablo Tellez, Chao Yi “Zoey” Wang.
SoCal Hard Eights: Judit Castillo, Erik Lange, Max Manthou, Irina Tereschenko.
Similar to what New York did, it seems Carolina was just looking to get cash in exchange for Buckner -- the player they had intended to drop. Newell isn't a UPA signed player, so she'll be dropped from Carolina's roster.
It's the second trade this week that Las Vegas has been involved in, and that squad is now looking like a very strong Challenger Level team.
SoCal picks up Castillo to replace Newell, who they couldn't keep.
Trade 3
Brooklyn Aces receive Mari Humberg from the New Jersey 5s.
New Jersey 5s receive Amanda Hendry and cash considerations from the Brooklyn Aces.
Updated rosters
New Jersey 5s: Amanda Hendry, Will Howells, Zane Navratil, Anna Leigh Waters.
Brooklyn Aces: Daniel De La Rosa, Blaine Hovenier, Mariana Humberg, Andrea Koop.
The 5s had a tough decision to make with who to drop after a successful season in 2024 that saw them finish runner-up to the Dallas Flash in the Premier Level final. Waters was obviously off limits, Natratil didn't have the best win-loss record but was clearly the leader of the team, and Howells signed with the UPA at the last minute to make him eligible to play MLP in 2025.
New Jersey obviously had decided they were going to drop Humberg and will now drop Hendry instead while picking up some cash.
Humberg is likely to be one of the top women at the Challenger Level, making the Aces a strong team in the 6-team division.
After teams have made their keeper selections -- which will be announced publicly on Tuesday -- there will be Premier and Challenger Level free agency operated by dynamic bidding for each selection slot (minimum bid amounts to be shared at a later date). This gives teams the chance to utilize whatever bidding strategy they see fit in order to build the best full roster, in a process similar to the 2024 Premier Level draft.
Premier Level teams will acquire between three and six players (depending on how many players they keep) during a free agency draft on Sunday, March 2.
