How Dominator used experience in basketball world to become a leading manufacturer of pickleball nets
For decades Dominator has been a well-known brand in the basketball world.
Since the company was founded in the early 2000s, they’ve specialized in making quality hoops and lighting for backyard courts, becoming a household name in the niche industry.
In the late 2010s, they started to notice a trend: More and more people were putting pickleball lines on their basketball slabs, or opting to build a pickleball court in their backyard instead of a basketball court. Given their expertise in equipment manufacturing, they jumped on the opportunity and started making their first-ever pickleball net, which launched in 2019.
At the time it wasn’t much – just a $300 net that was very easy to move on and off the court – and then COVID happened. People started working from home and backyard court construction took off as millions started playing pickleball and people started re-investing in their properties.
“As pickleball developed and became more popular, the equipment developed with it,” said Ben Tillman, the senior director of marketing for Dominator. “We’ve been blessed to be on the forefront of that, because court construction and court equipment was our niche. So as the sport took off and has continued to grow, the pickleball category has become a significant part of our business.”
Today Dominator offers three different tiers of pickleball nets ranging from $389 for their portable net to $1,999 for their pro-level net. They also have permanent in-ground net systems and various lighting options for backyard installation.

“At the beginning it was people who already had basketball courts and wanted to add pickleball,” Tillman said. “Now we have a lot of people who don’t care about the basketball part at all – they just want pickleball, and in some cases they are converting a tennis court into multiple pickleball courts. A lot of our customers are all-in on pickleball, and we have a lot of good options for them.”
Getting involved in the pro game
In the past 2-3 years, Dominator has become heavily involved in the pro game, as a sponsor of both the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball.
Their Pro Max pickleball net is the official net at the four PPA Tour slams each year as well as all MLP events.
“Our first exposure to the pro game was at Worlds in Dallas in 2024, and our team was blown away by what we saw,” Tillman said. “We knew then that we wanted to be a bigger part of pro pickleball, and our experience has been nothing but positive for our brand. Just to be a part of the die-hard pickleball community has been awesome.”
In addition to providing equipment for pro tournaments, Dominator is also the current title sponsor of MLP’s Utah Black Diamonds. With Dominator headquarters located in Vineyard, Utah – about 30 minutes south of Salt Lake City – being involved in the local pro team was a no-brainer, Tillman said. They have good relationships with Utah-based pros Allyce Jones and Tyler Loong as well as PPA Tour Founder and CEO Connor Pardoe, who is a Utah native.
Being involved in the pro game isn’t just about exposure, though, Tillman said. He pointed out that Dominator has always aimed to make equipment for players who take their game seriously, first with basketball hoops and now with pickleball nets. The fact that the nets are used at the pro level shows that the product is made for those who care about performance.
“We’ve always catered to high-level athletes, professionals, people who care about their craft – we don’t build products to rot away on the side of your house,” Tillman said. “If you’re investing in a dominator product, you’re investing in the future of your game or your child’s game.”
Beyond the backyard courts and their involvement in pro tournaments, Dominator nets are also becoming more common at indoor facilities throughout the country and facilities internationally. The company currently has international distribution in Canada, Australia, the Netherlands as well as several countries in Asia and South America.
“The indoor facilities have been a big growth catalyst for us over the past couple years,” Tillman said. “The fact that we have both permanent nets and portable nets is a real benefit because you have some facilities that are taking over an old grocery store or department store, and they can get the same net the pros are playing on without having to drill into the concrete.”
