It’s been more than a year since Ben Johns has won a singles title on the PPA Tour, but he came oh-so-close this week to ending that drought at the Las Vegas Open.

Johns took down Dylan Frazier (Round of 16), Christian Alshon (Quarterfinals) and John Lucian Goins (Semifinals) on his way to Sunday’s final. But then he ran into Hunter Johnson, who cruised to an 11-1, 11-3 win and earned his fourth gold medal of 2026.

It’s the second time Johns has made a singles final this year (he also settled for silver at the Mesa Cup in February), proving that he’s still capable of competing at the highest level in what is widely considered to be the most competitive division in the sport.

But after the singles loss, things didn’t get much better for Johns the rest of the day.

Johns and Gabe Tardio lost in men’s doubles for the first time in 2026, falling to Christian Alshon/Andrei Daescu 11-6, 11-8 in Sunday’s final. Then Johns and Anna Leigh Waters lost in the mixed doubles final to Hayden Patriquin/Anna Bright 11-9, 11-7.

So while the day started as a chance for Johns to get his first Triple Crown since 2024, it ended with him going 0-for-3 on Championship Sunday.
