Pickleball paddle performance is a nuanced topic these days.
As paddle technology has become more advanced in recent years, different models and construction methods produce drastically different performance and feel characteristics.
One of the areas where we’ve seen a lot of separation recently is in power and pop. The two phrases used to be synonymous in the paddle space, but that couldn’t be further from the truth in 2026.
What is power?
- Think full swings, like third-shot drives and putaways.
- The way a lot of paddles are designed now, a bigger swing will activate the core in a different way than a softer shot.
- Many refer to this as the “trampoline effect” — the ball is sinking into the paddle, then getting shot back out as the core rebounds.
What is pop?
- Think counters and punch volleys in fast exchanges at the net.
- The paddle is doing most of the work for you to produce speed off the paddle face.
- Paddles with high “pop” can sometimes be trickier to dial in feel on drops, resets and dinks, because the ball feels like it’s jumping off the paddle face quicker.
Choosing the right paddle for your game
We believe we’ve reached a point in pickleball equipment where fitting your paddle to your play style is more important (and easier) than ever. Are you a player who relies on power or focuses on the soft game? What are your best shots and your worst shots? Do you want a paddle that makes your good shots even better, or a paddle that can cover up some of your weaknesses?
These are all questions we think players should be asking themselves before they buy their next paddle.
When it comes to pop, in general we think beginners and lower level players are better served using paddles that offer low pop. This will allow them to keep the ball in play and reduce pop-ups. Advanced players, however, can benefit from paddles that have high pop because they can learn to dial in the soft stuff in a few practice sessions while taking advantage of that pop to win more hands battles.
Below you will find the paddles that stand out in our testing in terms of pop.
We’ve separated these paddles into three tiers:
Best in class: If you want maximum pop, this is the paddle we’d go for.
Elite: All of these paddles are extremely poppy. Maybe you’re looking for a certain brand or price point. We bet there’s something in here that fits your needs.
Very good: While these paddles didn’t make the elite tier, they still offer a ton of pop. We’re talking Top 15-ish out of hundreds and hundreds of paddles that we’ve tested.
So if pop is something you want to put an emphasis on, you can’t go wrong with any of the options below.
